Evaluation - from my Preliminary task

Since first having completed my preliminary task, I have developed a much greater understanding in regards to technological skills. For instance, during my preliminary task I needed a lot of assistance in grasping the correct tools for sound effects and the correct music. Since then, I am now much more confident in this area.

My preliminary task consisted of creating a short radio extract, mine being from a sports station. The extract had to include a jingle, presenter/commentator of a tennis match, sound effects, an archive clip of the tennis match and a guest speaker.

Below is my blog post which includes the script for my preliminary task:

Preliminary task script

I have managed to incorporate some of the same software into my final task, which I used in my preliminary. For instance, Sound cloud and Adobe audition. However, both radio extracts I created are targeted towards a completely different audience, and are both different genres. My preliminary task was a sports station, geared towards a predominately male audience from a high range of ages interested in sports. In contrast, my final task was aimed at a male and female audience, who are within the age range of 16-28 into contemporary chart hits; similar to capital.

I viewed my preliminary task as a learning point in understanding the different techniques and technologies which are involves in creating a radio extract. When I was first introduced to my task I was pretty unsure about being able to script an effective bulletin along with editing the final show. I also wasn't completely confident in the conventions of news bulletins, such as Vox pops, Sound bites, Archive clips or special guests, which I was going to include. As I progressed I gained a lot more confidence in this and I became more self-assured in being able to apply these to my final task.

Via including a blog post in my research and planning on all the conventions in a news bulletin, enabled me to see what I have learnt since my preliminary task.

Conventions of news bulletins

At the time I was quite happy with the representation in my preliminary task, partly because i had nothing to compare it with. Since creating North Side fm, I can see a clear improvement in the way my scripting and representation was conducted. This was because I viewed my preliminary task as a 'practice run' for my final piece.

By recording and using the editing software and equipment for my preliminary, this helped me achieve the technical effects at a higher standards in my final task. In regards to my news bulletin, I wanted everything consistently loud. In order to achieve this I played around with compression, which makes the volume more uniform. By making everything uniformly loud, it sounds like everything has been recorded as loud as it can be; all radio will sound compressed. Some of my news stories needed to sound as though they had been recorded by a correspondant.  I therefore needed to be able to differentiate between the studio mic and the correspondant's portable mic. In order to do this, I converted the overall sound to mono. I then equalised the sound, by taking out some bass and treble, so the quality matched the difference in quality you'd get between a studio mic and correspondant mic. I performed this process for story 1, story 2 for Susan Nelson, story 3's Vox pops (Peter Rhodes). I inserted sound effects which increased the sense of realism for viewers, to feel as though they were present where the news stories were taking place. For instance, I added in background sounds of people chanting at a protest, and noises of people talking, whilst at a primary/secondary school performance.

Before directing what I wanted my news presenters tone of voice to be, I listened to how it sounded in my preliminary task. I realised that although this tone was suitable for sports reports, I felts as though a more relaxed manner is better suited for local news. There were also certain voices where I wouldn't expect for them to sound scripted, such as members of the public. For instance, Vox pop 3 (Peter Rhodes) stuttered on one of his words, which added authenticity. Likewise, I inserted a breath into the 2nd Vox pop, in order to make it sound more genuine. I also felt that one of my actors voice was better suited to the student Vox pop, over being recorded for Susan Nelson, who is an older resident, as she has a younger sounding voice.

Other technological factors I have learnt since my preliminary task are being able to highlight and delete mistakes, put in gaps, rhythm in performers and use tricks to make it sound more professional. For example, I incorporated more of a gap in between some of the sentences I was saying, so it was more spread out. In regards to creating a catchy jingle suitable for my target audience, I included a chorus effect, which gave a repeat after the original sound.

I created a potential playlist of songs to include in my radio show. One of the songs I chose was Jorja Smith 'I am', which I altered with fades out.

Potential playlist

I created adverts for Ben and Jerry's new ice cream flavour a long with an advert for a pure gym membership. I was able to add in up beat music, a long with creative sound effects, which were suitable for the tone of advert. I got the music from the college's sound effects library, and I got the music from the college's music effects library.

I didn't include any adverts in my preliminary task, which meant that I wasn't entirely confident at the start, to be able to script my adverts to suit my target audience. After completing a lot of research into how to accurately present this effective structure, I included it in my research and planning.

Adverts for target audience

All of these technological techniques I have developed since the making of my preliminary task, where I wasn't as aware of the certain factors I could achieve. I hope that I have made my development process clear from how I carried out the tasks involved in my preliminary task to my final task. I also hope that since listening to my preliminary task, you are able to draw a comparison between my preliminary task and North Side fm.
