National/international News story - Disaster

Here is the link to this news article:

This news article states the raised death toll from Sunday's earthquake, on Iran-Iraq's border, to 530 deaths. Iranians officials have released these numbers and the Guardian has stated how this is the deadliest earthquake in the world this year.

I have analysed this report for the 5W's and News values. Below is what I found:

5W's

Who: The 530 people who died.
What: A powerful magnitude -7.3 earthquake, killing 530 people and injuring thousands more.
Where: Northern border region between Iran and Iraq.
When: 12th October 2017
Why: The underground rock suddenly broke along a fault.

News Values

Amplitude: The earth quake was an extremely big event, involving very large amounts of people. For instance, it killed around 530 people, and has left 7,460 injured.

Frequency: Earthquakes happen extremely often, dependent on which part of the world it is in. However, this earth quake was the biggest, most deadliest earth quake in 2017.

Impact: This story has had a huge, devastating effect on thousands of people's lives living in the area where the earth quake hit. The story contains elements that could threaten people's lives who live in countries prone to earth quakes.

Surprise: This event was a huge disaster with a huge amount of lives lost, which came as a massive surprise to families of those effected and others.

Personalisation: The article states how 'Iran wept' over a very big photo of an Iranian women holding her lost family member in her arms. This is therefore a human interest story, as it has discussed people that were effected in an emotional way.

Negativity: This news story is extremely negative as it is associated with death and injury from a natural disaster.
