Evaluation - Conventions of real media products (News)

I placed a lot of focus on ensuring the News Bulletin in my radio show was representative of the conventions found in existing ones. This was because my news report is the most important part of my radio extract. Therefore, to remain authenticity and realism I carried out a lot of research into news values, 5W's a long with the way in which news stories are presented on the radio, online and in News papers.

Below I have put links to my previous posts which include my research and planning into this:

The Five W's

News Values

As I decided to create a local radio show, geared towards listeners within the North London area, I ensured I conducted research into the conventions in local news stories, in comparison to the conventions in national/international news stories. This helped me come up with news stories, which were accurate for a local news bulletin.

Below is my research and planning for this:

National/International news stories:

Local news stories:
Business

After completing this I also realised the importance of how the genre of a radio station impacts the types of stories which are included on a news bulletin. As well as this, I carried out research in seeing how a radio stations target audience also held an influence over the stories which are included. For instance, I wanted to see if a radio station whose show targets an audience at all ages interested in Sports, such as Talk Sport, would include the same news stories as a radio show targeted at a different audience, such as Radio 2, which plays laid-back pop/rock and light classics for predominantly adults. My research and planning I conducted into this greatly improved my knowledge and understanding of the kinds of news stories to script for my own news bulletin.

Below I have included my posts for this:

Similarities and differences between news bulletins

In addition to this, I have also included research and planning into other conventions which are found in news bulletins. These include; expert guests, archive clips, sound bites, correspondants, outside broadcasts and Vox Pop's. All of the radio extracts I listened to contained sound bites, so I ensured I included these in my final news bulletin for my radio show. I also included a few others, such as Vox Pop's and going to a correspondant. This was because I believed it would make my news stories more engaging for listeners. I mentioned this within my research and planning, which I have linked down below:

Conventions of radio news bulletins

I have included audio clips of the Vox pops which I included in my news bulletin. These are included in the news story about the three local schools, which are  hosting performances in order to raise awareness for Abella Caron. I ensured I chose actors who I believed would suit suitable for their part; i.e. by having the correct tone of voice. For instance, for the parent Vox pop I chose an older actress, with a more mature voice. For the student Vox pop, I chose an actress whose got a much younger sounding voice. For the member of public Vox pop I directed the actor to sound interested in the cause.

Along with Vox pops, to accompany my news bulletin, I have also included going to a correspondant such as Eli Caine, in the club opening story along with sound bites from Lisa Freeman in this story.

My next story about crime rates in Camden included a sound bite from Susan Nelson, who was a local policeman in the area.

My final news story about a vegan restaurant scandal included an expert guest sound bite from Peter Rhodes, who was a restaurant critic. This sound bite was mixed in order to make it sound believable that he was on the phone.

I have also included the audio clips of my news presenter; Dylan Green.

I have inserted the final edit of my news bulletin. I have ensured I paid close attention to including the conventions I analysed whilst researching news bulletins from existing radio stations.
